Entertained or Learning?

There has never been a better time in human history to be entertained or to be learning. Here are a few examples I got when typing “There’s never been a better time to start learning” into my browser: Here, and here, and here.

Everything is available online. You can stream movies, and you can stream courses. You can look up crazy cat videos, and you can review the best in business books. You can scroll through social media posts by others and, you can teach others valuable lessons you have learned. All from the convenience of your couch at home.

The question is: Which one do you want to focus on? Entertainment…or learning?

There are people who love learning just for the sake of learning. They become professional students. But most people learn new stuff because they want to use what they learn, they are driven to learn because learning helps them get or do something else. If you are driven by anything, it’s probably not the latest entertaining posts. If you are driven, it is probably by a desire to be successful…or to transform yourself…or to transform society.

If you are driven, then you probably want—and you need—to learn!

The best way to be successful, transform yourself or transform others, is to start your own company. You don’t believe that? Sure, you can go other routes to be successful and to transform people. You could go into politics. You could become a church/synagogue/temple leader. But are those routes the best routes? All of those routes depend on other people’s generosity—and their liking you. Starting your own company and delivering a product or service others want to pay you for…that in itself is transforming. Others don’t even have to like you for you to earn that money—they just have to like your product or service. And you can do even more for yourself and society with the profits from those payments.

Learning is not a reason to start a company of your own. But if do start your own company to be successful or to transform yourself or others, then you will have to learn! You will constantly be learning, as long as you own that company. So you must love and embrace the idea of Always Be Learning (ABL) if you want to be a business owner. Conversely, if you love and embrace the idea of ABL, then you will make a great entrepreneur.
