Retired or Productive

Once you see the value in being independent and always learning, you must decide whether you want to be productive. It’s okay not to work. If you have income from outside sources (investments, pension, etc), you may not have to work. Or maybe you want to be “semi-retired.” Which is just a way of saying that you chose not to be as productive as you used to be.

But productive people tend to be happier. There’s extraordinary self-satisfaction in producing something that other people want to pay you for. And there is more. Activities you do “in retirement” can be even better when they are part of “being productive.” A perfect example is travel. Sightseeing is travel life made easy. But when you travel as part of a working gig, you can enjoy meeting people in different cultures for joint a purpose. The most memorable travel adventures I’ve had are always the ones I enjoyed while “doing business.”

Entrepreneurs certainly value productivity. While being independent and always learning are fine, an entrepreneur is anxious to put all of that to work. To make something that helps others or give others joy. This is where it becomes obvious that Entrepreneurs produce the wealth that everyone else consumes.

Productivity is the third value inherent in entrepreneurship–Independence, Learning, and Productivity. If you are driven by these values, you need to be an entrepreneur. And if you already have your own company, you should start every day thinking about these values. Put them into the description of your company. Teach them to the people who work for you (employees and independent contractors).
